By Anime Pillow · Updated · 7 min read
A great AI design starts with a great description. You do not need art vocabulary; you need to know your character. This guide gives you a simple formula for writing character prompts, the rules that keep designs original and printable, and 30 original prompt ideas grouped by vibe. Every idea has a "Try this" button that opens it in our designer.

Good prompts are specific about what makes a character recognisable. Work through these five parts and stop when it sounds like your character:
- Who: say "adult" for humanoid characters, or pick a non-human (spirit, dragon, robot, fox). A role or job gives instant personality: barista, cartographer, starship navigator.
- Look: hair color and style, eye color, and one distinctive feature such as freckles, glasses or animal ears.
- Outfit: two or three concrete pieces with colors, like "oversized cream cardigan, brown corduroy apron".
- Prop or pose: something in their hands or a cozy action (reading, holding tea, napping with a cat).
- Setting and mood: a simple backdrop and light, like "paper lanterns", "rainy window" or "starry night".
You do not need to write "full body" or "body pillow". Our designer already lays out every character as a full-length, vertical body pillow design, so spend your words on the character.
Be specific, not long. Around 25–60 words is usually plenty, and descriptions can be up to 600 characters. Ten precise details beat fifty vague adjectives.
Rules that keep your character original and printable
- Originals only: no franchise, studio or artist names, and no "in the style of" a living artist. Describe the look instead, such as "soft watercolor shading" or "bold cel-shaded anime".
- Say "adult" for humanoid characters and avoid words that skew young, such as "little", "petite" or "school uniform".
- Fully clothed and wholesome. Cozy poses work best: sleeping, reading, holding a drink, hugging a plush.
- Non-human characters (animals, spirits, robots, creatures) are a great route to something truly unique.
- The full rules are in our content policy.
How to design an original character in five steps
- Start with a role and a twist: "a fearsome dragon who runs a quiet library" is more memorable than "a dragon".
- Choose two or three main colors and repeat them in hair, outfit and props.
- Give them one signature item they never go without: a compass necklace, a wrench, a lantern.
- Imagine a second look, like a sleepy or off-duty version. It makes a great back side for the pillow.
- Iterate: generate, change one detail at a time, and keep what works.

Can I use a character from my favorite anime as a prompt?
No. We only print original characters, so franchise names and lookalikes are not allowed. Describe the vibe you love instead, and the AI will design a brand-new character.
How long should an AI anime character prompt be?
Around 25–60 words with concrete details (who, look, outfit, prop, setting) usually works best. Descriptions can be up to 600 characters.
The AI got a detail wrong. What can I do?
Make that detail more specific or move it earlier in your description, then generate again. Before printing you also approve a print proof and can request changes.
Can I turn my own OC into a pillow?
Yes, as long as it is your original character (or one you have licensed). Describe it with the formula above and refine until it looks right.
