Dakimakura Size Guide: 150x50 vs 160x50 Body Pillow Covers

By Anime Pillow · Updated · 5 min read

Body pillows look simple until you have to pick a length. The two standard dakimakura sizes differ by only 10 cm, but that difference changes how the pillow fits your bed, your height and the way you sleep. This guide explains both sizes we print, how covers and inner pillows fit together, and how to choose if you sleep on your side.

The two sizes at a glance

We print covers in two sizes. Both are 50 cm wide, both close with a zipper, and both are printed on the front and the back with your original character.

  • 150 × 50 cm: the standard dakimakura size, which fits most inner pillows sold for body pillows. It is included in the base price (covers start at $49.00).
  • 160 × 50 cm: full-length and extra huggable, +$6.00 on top of the base price.

Sizes are the flat measurements of the cover. Like any sewn textile, expect a tolerance of about 1–2 cm, and a little give once the cover is stretched over a pillow.

150x50 vs 160x50: what actually changes

  • Length in your arms: 10 cm is roughly the width of a hand. When you hug a 160 cm pillow lying down, the bottom end reaches further down your legs.
  • Bed space: both lengths fit lengthwise on a standard single bed. On a short or narrow bed (a bunk, daybed or sofa bed) the 150 cm pillow leaves you more room.
  • Handling: a shorter pillow is a little easier to wrestle in and out of its cover and quicker to dry after washing.
  • Artwork: your character is drawn as a full-length, vertical illustration for either size, and the print proof shows exactly what will be printed before production starts.
  • Price: the 160 × 50 cm cover costs $6.00 more.

Which size fits you?

There is no formula that works for everyone. It comes down to your height, your bed and how you like to hug. A useful rule of thumb:

  • Choose 150 × 50 cm if you are on the shorter side, sleep on a single or narrow bed, already own a 150 cm inner pillow, or want the most affordable option.
  • Choose 160 × 50 cm if you are tall, like to hook a leg over the pillow, or want it to feel like a full-length companion rather than a big cushion.
  • Buying a gift and unsure? 150 × 50 cm is the safer choice because it fits most inner pillows the recipient may already have.

Quick test: lie on your side in your usual position and have someone measure from your chin to where your shins rest. If that distance is close to 150 cm or longer, the 160 cm cover gives you more pillow to hold.

Inner pillows: how covers and inserts match

The cover is the printed part; the inner pillow (insert) is what gives it shape. They need to match in size for the artwork to look its best.

  • Our matching inner pillow add-on (+$29.00) is made for the cover size you choose, so the pair arrives ready to hug. The "Complete Companion" package at checkout adds it for you.
  • Using an insert you already own? Lay it flat, measure the length and width, and pick the cover with the same size. Measure rather than trusting the product title.
  • A cover that is too big looks baggy and wrinkles across your character's face.
  • A cover that is too small strains the zipper and seams and stretches the print.
  • A full, slightly firm insert keeps the fabric smooth. 2-Way Tricot stretches to hug the insert; Peach Skin has less stretch, so a well-filled insert matters more.

The best body pillow for side sleepers

Many side sleepers hug a body pillow so the top arm and top knee have somewhere to rest instead of dropping forward. What to look for:

  • Length: the pillow should support your arm and your knee at the same time. Taller side sleepers usually find 160 × 50 cm more comfortable for this.
  • Fullness: a fuller insert keeps your knees apart and holds its shape through the night; a softer one is easier to scrunch and wrap around.
  • Fabric feel: Peach Skin feels soft and matte, 2-Way Tricot smooth and silky. See our fabric comparison.
  • Easy care: you will be pressed against it every night, so plan to wash the cover regularly. Here is how to wash a body pillow cover.

A body pillow is a comfort item, not a medical device. If you have back, hip or shoulder pain, ask a doctor or physiotherapist about your sleep setup.

Before you order

  • Every cover is made to order: 10–14 days production + 5–10 days shipping.
  • You approve a print proof before production, and can request changes if a detail is off.
  • Shipping is a flat $9.95, and free on orders of $89.00 or more.

FAQ

Is 150x50 or 160x50 the more common dakimakura size?

150 × 50 cm is the long-standing standard and fits most inner pillows sold for body pillows. 160 × 50 cm is the full-length option for people who want more to hug.

Can I put a 150 cm insert in a 160x50 body pillow cover?

It will go in, but the extra length leaves the cover loose and wrinkled at one end, which distorts the artwork. For the best look, match the cover to the insert.

Does the cover come with an inner pillow?

No, the base price is for the printed cover. Add our matching inner pillow (+$29.00) or choose the Complete Companion package at checkout.

Which size is best for side sleepers?

Side sleepers who hug with an arm and a leg usually prefer 160 × 50 cm, especially if they are tall. On a smaller bed, or if you are shorter, 150 × 50 cm is often enough.
